On MTB to Passo dei Campelli Sport
Main stages: Schilpario – Gardena – Giovetto – Rifugio Campione – Madonnina and Campelli Lake – Valzellazzo – Schilpario
A fascinating and extremely panoramic route, with long, tiring climbs and fast, technical downhill sections. The easy start along the Nordic ski trail prepares us for the challenging climb to Monte Gardena, a panoramic terrace overlooking the Campelli Basin amphitheater. The variant to the ancient Giovetto mining road requires some strong pedaling but rewards you with a fantastic view of the Sellero waterfalls. A visit to the nearby Rifugio Campione near Passo dei Campelli is a must – at least for a coffee. The return is technical and adrenaline-pumping after passing the Campelli Madonnina.

Route
The starting point is at Piazzale degli Alpini in Schilpario. Following the main road to Passo del Vivione, enter the first large lot on the right and cross a wooden bridge – this is the start of the Nordic ski trail. Continue left, follow the dirt road into the forest always keeping to the left, until reaching the Ristorante Capriolo. From the restaurant’s lot, turn right onto the paved road that leads to Passo del Vivione.
After a few kilometers uphill, reach Rifugio Baracca Rossa, pass it, and shortly after turn right following signs for Campelli. After about 300 meters, before the bridge, stay left and continue up the dirt road. Pass the first farmhouse with a watering trough and continue uphill toward Monte Gardena.
PAY ATTENTION TO THE NEXT TURN ON YOUR RIGHT. When you see several troughs in a row, leave the road and exit to the right a few meters before reaching the tanks (which may be useful for a drink of water). Stay right and start descending across the field along the steepest gradient. Keep to the right – terrain features will help you spot the trail which, a few dozen meters lower, sharply bends left and joins trail 428 of the CAI (Italian Alpine Club), which should be followed closely.
Following this at times technical trail that crosses the entire slope, you’ll arrive at a dirt road at Giovetto. Turn right, and at the first junction there is the option of a detour uphill for about 1 km leading to a panoramic terrace overlooking the Sellero waterfalls. The road ends here, and you descend the same way. Back at the previously passed junction, turn left and continue faithfully along the dirt road. At the next junction, turn left again, continuing uphill to Passo dei Campelli. A few meters after the pass, turn left again onto the road that climbs to Rifugio Campione.
