Schilpario – Grom Hut

A hike loved by locals, almost entirely through the forest, with a moderate elevation gain. The destination of the summer trophy of the same name, the view once you reach Baita Grom will make every step worth it!

Starting Point

The ideal starting point for this hike is the small church of St. Elisabeth in Schilpario, located near the Pista degli Abeti ski slope. You can park your car in the nearby parking area next to the Funtanì bar. Just past the church, you can spot the trail climbing up on the left side of the road, opposite the mountain rescue hut.

Route

The route from Schilpario to Baita Grom is almost entirely uphill and through the forest. Along the trail there are handmade arrow signs pointing the way. Getting lost is fairly unlikely, as there are no significant forks in the path. If in doubt, you can follow the GPX track downloadable at the bottom of this page.

Forest trail towards Baita Grom

Along the route, in the upper part of the forest, you will find two Jal (flat, treeless woodland clearings once used for charcoal production) and several natural water springs. Once out of the forest, the final 200 metres of the hike cross a steep meadow. After passing the lower hut, the view begins to open up, revealing a stunning panorama of the Pizzo Camino, Esendola and Sossino massifs, as well as the village of Schilpario below.

Once you reach the upper hut, you are welcome to stop and take in the view, while fully respecting the property. The hut is a private structure and is not open to visitors inside, so the utmost respect is requested. Security cameras have been installed on site to encourage respectful behaviour.

Return

We recommend returning via the same trail used for the ascent. Alternatively, you can continue and connect to CAI trail 415, climbing up to Monte Busma and the Laghetti delle Valli.
