Loc. Roccolo – Gleno dam

The Gleno Dam lies at the foot of Mount Gleno, one of the main peaks of the Orobie Alps. The excursion we present here is unique and rich in history. The trek to the Gleno Dam combines the beauty of the Val di Scalve’s natural landscape with the memory of the immense tragedy of the Gleno Dam disaster. The route starting from Roccolo follows CAI trail 410, taking the same path as the variant from Bueggio and San Carlo.

Route:

From Roccolo in Pezzolo (1,206 m above sea level), about 3.5 km from the center of Vilminore, you enter the woods and follow an easy path that is mostly flat, with two short sections of gentle uphill. After about 15 minutes of walking, you reach the start of the “Corne Strette” trail leading to Nona. Continuing toward the dam, you will encounter a descent that then levels out near the “Ponte del Gleno,” where trails coming from San Carlo and Bueggio meet.

From here, take CAI trail 410 from Bueggio. The route becomes steeper as you enter the forest and proceed toward the Gleno Dam. Halfway along the trail there is a wildlife observation point, and throughout the route you can observe debris deposits of Lombard Verrucano rock. Near the dam the path becomes flatter and joins the trail coming from Nona. From there, you cross a valley and finally a short final climb allows you to pass a ridge behind which the ruins of the Gleno Dam come into view. It is possible to return to the starting point by retracing the same route, or descend along CAI trail 409A, which leads to Nona and then back down to Pezzolo along the trail.
