San Carlo Church – Gleno dam
The trek to the Gleno Dam combines the natural beauty of the Scalve Valley with the memory of the terrible tragedy of the Gleno Dam. The route starts from San Carlo, the charming indigo-coloured church located just after the village of Vilminore di Scalve in the direction of Bueggio, and joins the CAI 410 trail, the same as the Bueggio-Gleno Dam variant.
Route:
This trail starts from the little church of San Carlo, recognisable by its white and blue colours (located on the road connecting Vilminore to Bueggio). The church is about a two-minute drive from Vilminore, or a ten-minute walk. The wide trail starts on the right side of the road and continues with a slight incline until it reaches Ponte del Gleno. Here you will find the trails coming from Nona (via Corne Strette), Roccolo and Bueggio.
From here, take the CAI 410 trail, where the slope becomes steeper, enter the woods and continue towards the Gleno Dam. Halfway along the route, there is a wildlife observatory, and you can also see deposits of Verrucano Lombardo rock along the entire route. Near the dam, the trail becomes flatter and meets the trail coming from Nona. Once you reach this point, you will walk through a valley and finally, a last small climb will take you over a ridge behind which you can see the ruins of the Gleno Dam.
